Comvita founder celebrates 100th Birthday

18 August 2010  |  Admin

Happy 100th Birthday Claude.

Comvita co-founder Claude Stratford turns 100 today.

Having started with his first beehive in 1921 at age 11, ironically co-founding Comvita was a 'retirement' project. His other co-founder Alan Bougen says "He was selling health foods when most people wouldn't have even heard the term".

After suffering ill-health in his early years, and being in and out of hospital, his health dramatically improved when he discovered the benefits of taking products from the hive. Having read a book on the benefits of bee pollen, and already been a bee keeping enthusiast, he started producing and consuming it from his mid twenties. This led to a lifelong quest to create the best natural remedies from bee-related products.

And Claude's secret to getting to 100 in a healthy state? Mostly his own products of course. He has a daily dose of bee pollen, manuka honey, olive leaf complex, and Omega 3. Claude's own special recipe Herbal Elixir (which is still a best seller in winter today - the Comvita Propolis Herbal Elixir) is also a firm favourite when required.

It is due to this long history and commitment to product quality and purity that is part of the DNA of Comvita, that The New Zealand Honey Shop is proud to help you also use these same bee products. A heritage that goes back to 1921, and real life value in the products as shown by now 100 year old Claude.

Here are some links to a couple of the stories on his birthday from New Zealand media:

Can eating the rainbow support healthy cognition?

In this blog, Clinical Neuroscientist Miguel Toribio-Mateas discusses the benefits of a diet full of colour for healthy cognition and different brain processes; from memory to reaction time.

Cognition refers to a range of processes relating to the acquisition, storage, manipulation, and retrieval of information by the human brain. It underpins nearly all of our daily activities, in health and disease, across the age span.

Cognition can be separated into multiple distinct functions, dependent on particular areas of the brain or “brain circuits” that work based on a number of natural chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are created by the body using building blocks that come from nutrients, hence the importance of being aware of what foods can act as sources of the necessary active components of the molecules that drive our brain processes.
