Manuka Honey and MRSA

One area where researchers have been interested to find if manuka honey is effective is in dealing with MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

Research from the University of Wales Institute has shown good results in medical grade manuka honey treating MRSA.

It is important here to reiterate that not all manuka honey is the same, and that only some contains the additional non-peroxide antibacterial activity that is measured and recognised under the UMF® rating system (which also involves an auditing process).

Only medical grade manuka honey that has been sterilised, and with proven antibacterial level should be used on wounds for this purpose.

ManukaCare - a wound ready product has been shown to fight against a range of bacteria including MRSA. It reduces the risk of infection, and is suitable for moist wound types.

This product has now also gained a medical devices license (in the UK), which now allows greater claims about its ability to help. For example it can now claim 'first aid ready', 'suitable for most wound types' and 'reduces the risk of infection from bacteria including MRSA' (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus - the nasty antibiotic resistant superbug). You will now find these on its label.

You can learn more about Manukacare here.
