Description

Organic Bergamot (Citrus bergamia FCF)

Aroma
Bergamot essential oil is a light, delicate and refreshing citrus oil. It smells similar to oranges and lemons, with a floral and balsamic spicy undertone.
The plant
The citrus tree is a delicate tree, which bears orange coloured fruit that are shaped like pears. The bergamot tree is normally grown in Italy and Morocco and needs special growing conditions, including specific climate and soil quality.
The extraction
Bergamot essential oil is extracted from the peel of the fruit when it is at the stage of being nearly ripe. The extraction process used is cold expression which maintains the integrity of the active ingredients.
Amour Natural’s Bergamot essential oil is bergaptene free, which is achieved by a process called fractionation and means that the oil causes less photosensitivity when used on the skin.
Affects
Bergamot essential oil has an uplifting and rejuvenating effect and is particularly popular with aromatherapists for its ability to lift the spirits. It is often used in massage oils, burners and baths. The oil can also ease digestive stress and has an antiseptic action on the skin.
History
According to ancient legends, Christopher Columbus was the first to discover the bergamot tree in the Canary Islands and he later introduced it to Spain and Italy.
The name ‘bergamot’ comes from a small Italian town where the tree was originally grown, and the oil has been used in Italian folklore as early dated as 1725.
Interesting facts
The oil is used in earl grey tea and is one of the most common ingredients in all perfumes, especially perfumes for men.
Petitgrain is another form of bergamot, achieved by the distillation of the leaves.
Chemical constituents
Linalool, Nerol, Terpineoil (Alcohols), Linalyl acetate (Ester), Dipentene, Limone (Terpenes).
Blending
Bergamot essential oil blends well with citrus oils, as well as lavender, cypress, neroli, jasmine, and chamomile.
